COMMENTARY ON THE GOSPEL: J.H. Blunt

Commentary from
THE ANNOTATED
BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER
Edited by JOHN HENRY BLUNT
Rivingtons, London, 1884

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY

The compassion of Christ is illustrated by the Gospel of this Sunday, which is that narrating the restoration to life of the widow's son; the pity of the Father is besought for the Church; and the earnest prayer of St. Paul in the Epistle exemplifies the spirit in which such a prayer should be offered, as well as the nature of the blessings to be prayed for. Our Lord's meeting with the funeral procession at the gate of the city may be taken as a beautiful precedent for the custom ordered in the second Rubric of the Burial Service: and when mourners hear Christ's ministers, on such an occasion, saying, "I am the Resurrection and the Life," they may remember with thankful hope that these are the words of Him Who, saying, "Weep not...came and touched the bier," and said also, "Young man, I say unto thee, Arise."

Angels and Children: A saying of Jesus

THE GOSPEL.  S. Matthew 18. 1.
AT the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, and said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.ll humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name, receiveth me. ...

THE GOSPEL:Healing a deaf and dumb man

LIFT EVERY VOICE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGqx4asAJqs&feature=related

THE GOSPEL.  S. Mark 7. 31
JESUS, departing from the region of Tyre, came through Sidon unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the region of Decapolis.  And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech: and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.  And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat, and touched his tongue; and looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.  And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.  And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it; and were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well; he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.

GRADUAL: Psalm 34:Ik loof den Heer', mijn God

GRADUAL.  Ps 34:1-5
I WILL alway give thanks unto the Lord; / his praise shall ever be in my mouth.
2 My soul shall make her boast in the Lord; / the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.
3 O praise the Lord with me, / and let us magnify his Name together.
4 I sought the Lord, and he heard me; / yea, he delivered me out of all my fears.
Alleluia, All.  O look unto him and be lightened; / and your faces shall not be ashamed.  All.

THE EPISTLE: The Spirit Giveth Life

THE DESERT ROSE DANCE COMPANY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgvUGeGYffo

THE EPISTLE.  2 Cor. 3. 4
SUCH trust have we through Christ to God-ward: Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God.  Who also hath made us able ministers of the new covenant; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.  But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance, which glory was to be done away; how shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?  For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.

INTROIT:Psalm 70

INTROIT.  Ps 70
Ant.  O GOD, make haste to save me; / O Lord, make hast to help me.
2 Let them be ashamed and confounded that seek after my soul; / let them be turned backward and put to confusion that wish me evil.
3 Let them for their reward be soon brought to shame / that cry over me, 'There, there.'
4 But let all those that seek thee be joyful and glad in thee; / and let all such as delight in thy  salvation say alway, 'The Lord be praised.'
5 As for me, I am poor and in misery; / haste thee unto me, O God.
6 Thou art my helper, and my redeemer; / O Lord, make no long tarrying.
Glory be.  Repeat Antiphon.

THIS WEEK

This week's Art as Exegesis is devouted to Lutheran College choral music.  The selected schools are from the midwestern United States, and each owes much to the work of F. Melius Christianson and his St. Olaf Choirs.  Your editor's exuse for making this presentation is nostalga, he is a graduate of Waldorf College and, though he is neither a Lutheran nor a musician-was in some ways "formed"  by that tradition.  As these schools begin to prepare for the new school year, he wishes to honor that tradition.

THE COLLECT: Ascension Day

THE COLLECT.
GRANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that since we do believe thy only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have ascended into the heavens; so we may also in heart and mind thither ascend, and with him continually dwell, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end.  Amen.

EASTER 4-Every Good Gift

THE COLLECT.
O ALMIGHTY God, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men: Grant unto thy people, that they may love the things which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

THE EPISTLE.  S. James 1. 17
EVERY good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.  Of his own will he brought us to birth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first-fruits of his creatures.  Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.  Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and residue of wickedness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

The people of the small Baptist Church in which I was raised would certainly have thought of themselves as strangers and pilgrims.  And would have felt at home with the Mennonites doing this singing.

Easter III-Strangers and Pilgrims

THE COLLECT.
Almighty God, who shewest to them that be in error the light of thy truth, to the intent that they may return into the way of righteousness: Grant unto all them that are admitted into the fellowship of Christ's religion, that they may forsake those things that are contrary to their profession, and follow all such things as are agreeable to the same; through our Lord Jesus Christ.  Amen

COLLECT FOR EASTER

Almighty God, who through thine only-begotten Son Jesus Christ hast overcome death, and opened unto us the gate of everlasting life: We humbly beseech thee, that as by thy special grace thou dost put into our minds good desires, so by thy continual help we may bring the same to good effect; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.  Amen.
